Climate Action Plan

At Briscoe Lane Academy, we know that climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing our children’s generation. That’s why we are committed to making sustainability a natural part of school life — not just something we learn about in lessons, but something we live and experience together.

Here’s what that looks like for our children and families:

       - Learning and Understanding – Children learn about climate change in clear, age-appropriate ways so they can make sense of what’s happening in the world around them. We teach a shared language around climate change so children feel confident to ask questions, share ideas, and talk about solutions.

       - Looking After Wellbeing – We help children deal with worries about climate change (sometimes called eco-anxiety) and show them how their actions, big or small, can make a real difference. Children spend time outdoors, care for their school grounds, and discover how nature can boost both their health and happiness.

       - Practical Action in School – From reducing energy use to planting for biodiversity, children see first-hand how small changes in school life can have a big impact. We build strong links with parents, local groups, and businesses so that what we do in school connects with the wider community.

       - Inspiring Futures – We show children that caring for the planet can also be part of their future jobs and opportunities as they grow older.

By weaving sustainability into everyday learning and experiences, we are helping our children to be resilient, hopeful, and ready to care for their world. Together, as families and a school community, we can help prepare them for the future while making a difference today.

Our Sustainability and Climate Action Plan is guided by the Department for Education’s four focus areas:

1.        Decarbonisation – Reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency.

2.       Adaptation & Resilience – Preparing for the effects of climate change, including extreme weather.

3.       Biodiversity – Protecting and enhancing natural habitats.

4.       Climate Education & Green Careers – Providing knowledge-rich learning and inspiring sustainable futures

We want to make sustainability a natural part of everyday life. This means children won’t just learn about climate change in lessons—they’ll also experience what it looks like to live in a more environmentally friendly way. By working together, we can help protect the planet, spark children’s creativity, and build a healthier, fairer, and greener future for them and the generations to come.
