Physical Education Funding

What is the Sport Premium?

The government is providing additional funding of £150 million per annum for the academic years 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 to improve provision of Physical Education and Sport in primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and Sport in schools. Briscoe Lane Academy have received £9190 in the academic year 2013/14.Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

From September 2013, schools will be held to account over how they spend their additional, ring-fenced funding. Ofsted will strengthen the coverage of PE and sport within the 'Inspectors’ handbook' and supporting guidance so that both schools and inspectors know how sport and PE will be assessed in future as part of the school’s overall provision.

One year on, Ofsted will carry out a survey reporting on the first year’s expenditure of additional funding and its impact. Schools will also be required to include details of their provision of PE and sport on their website, alongside details of their broader curriculum, so that parents can compare sports provision between schools, both within and beyond the school day.

How are we using the funding to benefit our children?

At Briscoe Lane Academy we have allocated the funding in a number of ways.

  • Hiring qualified sports coaches to provide a range of sporting activities at lunchtime for all KS1 and KS2 classes in order to increase pupil participation and enjoyment in sport.
  • Providing children from Reception to Year 6, one hour per week during curriculum time, specialist coaching from City in the Community (CITC). Coaches will work alongside teachers to increase the quality of provision, as well as enhancing teacher confidence and skill in teaching PE.
  • Professional development opportunities for the PE coordinator and other staff, to then feedback or deliver to staff during INSET training and staff meetings.
  • Continuing to provide pupils with opportunities to take part in Inter/Intra school competitions through the Manchester school games programme.
  • Audit and update PE and Sporting equipment to ensure that children have access to a wide range of high quality apparatus.
  • Providing Cyber Coach, an interactive media system, to enhance quality and enjoyment of dance and fitness provision throughout school.
